桜庭統 Motoi Sakuraba ‎– Force Of Light (1988, CD, Japan)

Keyboards virtuoso Motoï SAKURABA performs a truly majestic and melodious symphonic rock. He has a special taste for rich and refined sonorities and for energetic, emphatic and luxuriant moments. All of those are built in themes displaying a great musicality and a permanently inspired technique. "Gikyokuonsou" (1990) was issued a year after the break up of DEJA VU, a legendary Japanese band that was once led by him, and that only issued one excellent album in 1988 ("Baroque In The Future"). "Force Of Light" was released nine years later, in 1998, as the soundtrack to the video game "Shining Force III"… Wonderful and highly symphonic works, worth discovering!

Nice quality recording if very oddly balanced. After doing some research, I found at least a couple of references that imply that this is actually taken from the DAT soundboard recording that someone nicked! The set is mostly familiar material but from a not so familiar line-up (if the cover is correct that is). ultimathulerecords

Note
Recorded live on June 22, 1992 at The Church Of St Vitus, Wrocław, Poland.

“Avant-folk”, “ethno-psychedelic minimal”, and even “post-Komeda-jazz” – there are just a few examples of how was described the stylistics of Księżyc (The Moon) – a music group founded in the early 90s of the last century and reactivated in 2014.

Księżyc (Moon) was a project from Poland active in the 1990s. Members included Agata Harz (vocals), Katarzyna Smoluk (vocals, piano), Robert Niziński (wind instruments, keyboards), Lechosław Polak (accordion, keyboards, synthesizers), and Remigiusz Mazur-Hanaj (lyrics, tapes). The spirit of Księżyc captures early and late music with a medieval sound, rooted in Slavic tradition combined with elements of minimalism and vocal experiments of the 20th century. The alchemy of these constituent parts results in a breathtaking original music, both delicate and sinister. The surreal, fairy-tale-inspired lyrics add to the inherent beauty, sadness, and madness within. Originally released on cassette and 10" vinyl by OBUH Records in 1996, the group's defining statement has now been remastered by Piotr Nykiel at Nykiel Audio and cut on 12", allowing for vastly improved sound quality.

Unique ethereal avant ritual folk with female vocals, not to be missed by anyone interested in music of strange & exquisite beauty.Relesed by Poland's Obuh label.
Michael J. Salo wrote in 2005:
Just continuing the description above. I can hardly contain my enthusiasm for this release. I love this music. The best I can try to explain Ksiezyc ("The Moon"), is some blend of the romantic-acoustic-ballad Prikosnovenie school groups such as Fleur, together with the psychedelic experimentalism of the great Polish acts Atman & Magic Carpathians. I'm also getting a Jack or Jive vibe out of this (a Polish Jack or Jive?) Anyone interested in any of the above references should aquire this album without hestitation. The female vocals are higher quality than 90% of music recorded today, and meanwhile there is more careful attention to instrumental sonics than you could ever expect in vocally-oriented music.Available information in English on this group is scant, but this new release is apparently a collection of all their recorded music, which dates back to the early 90's. Who knew? It's tempting to declare, "ahead of their time," but that wouldn't be quite right. Instead this band is completely removed from time. This is timeless.A hand numbered limited edition item, in appropriately unique & beautiful handmade packaging. Talk about a gem. (mutantsounds)

I Fiori Del Sole is a quintessential Italian minimalist album by composers Michele Fedrigotti and Danilo Lorenzini. Featuring production from the legendary Franco Battiato, the album features bare organ numbers on Side A (tracks 1-6) and piano numbers on Side B (tracks 7-11). The album was released by the Milan-based experimental label Cramps Records in 1979.

Peter Frohmader/Nekropolis ‎– Musik Aus Dem Schattenreich (1981, LP, Germany)

This is Peter Frohmader's first LP and is a self produced and released record, and as such bears some of the qualities of immediacy and rawness you would expect from a German experimentalist's debut. All the tracks have a ghostly synthesizer droning of various intensity to provide a heavily atmospheric backdrop, sometimes hostile, stormy howlings of alien and drifting and even cosmic, paint your own visuals. Having said this, the LP is not at all unvaried, the first three tracks are swamped by powerful bass, guitar and drums to give a demonic early Can feel. The last track on this side (the hell side) is a synthesizer piece, which leaves behind the rock 'n' roll and begins the tendency for the whole LP to quieten down and demand more attention and volume. This track is the longest at 8:54 and reminds you of the benefits to be had from draught exclusion.Side two (the night cycle) opens similarly, then the Frohmader trademark, intense bass bashing creeps in and takes over the synthesizer swirl, the restrained electric percussion and what sounds like the crows cawing with lots of echo. The next track is a build up of synthesizer twitters, drones, and notes plus the unobtrusive electric percussion giving an overall Schnitzler sound. After this the LP quietens right down with deep slow echoed layers of what sounds like electric cello and synthesizer. In the final track the synthesizer drones make little more noise than the average fridge, or maybe that is the fridge, whilst all manners of gong and tam tam are mallet struck and left to reverberate and finish of the side. by Alan & Steve Freeman, first published in Audion 1 (1986)

... If you can imagine Renaissance, Mike Oldfield and Malicorne, you are choosing music that is close in many ways to Lucifer who had a musical style thaty is hardly to be found in Japan. Lucifer play progressive folk rock which is sometimes produced in Western Eupore and they add a little of Japanese flavor. (progGnosis)

In 1969 Paolo Villaggio was well known to television audiences as Professor Kranz and his camel stuffed animals, a grotesque character with hat and tails in the program “Quelli della Domenica.” “The Terrible Inspector” was his second film after his debut on the cinemas in 1968 with the film “Eat it” (“Mangiala”). Fantozzi would become a national hit six years later, in 1975, but Villaggio’s comic vein had already exploded in the role of Paolo De Angelis, a young man willing to do anything to go up in his career. The great Charles Rustichelli composed the background music with a small orchestra, which highlights the terrible personality of the protagonist through scores ranging from funny to grotesque. Although the main character is an extremely grouchy, cun- ning man, he truly loves his girlfriend, played by a young and beautiful Agostina Belli. Rustichelli wrote a recurring romantic waltz motif that is very sentimental. During the opening credits there is an amusing nursery rhyme sung by a male voice and a choir, which seems to imitate the famous theme of Brancaleone (we’ve also included an alter- native version in mono with vocals off allowing you to hear a delightful shake arrange- ment). For our CD, lasting a total of 46:05 minutes, we have used the stereo master tapes of the recording session.

Lyrics By [Based On Poems] – Francesco Petrarca

Ever since its foundation in 1994, Italian collective Camerata Mediolanense merges Wave and Post Punk with the musical spirit of the Renaissance and Baroque periods, not shying away from experimentation. Although they have been received mainly within the neoclassical and neofolk spheres, professional composer and musicologist Elena Previdi and her entourage cover a wide area, ranging from traditional songs across archaic rhythmic parts to electronic elements, all of which make it hard to categorize the three studio albums, multiple singles, and EPs Camerata Mediolanense has issued so far.

After five years in the making, Camerata Mediolanense's fourth album "Vertute, Honor, Bellezza" (English: "Virtue, Honour, Beauty") is finished now. With the new album the band continues to proceed on its path, mixing archaic, traditional and tribalistic music with experimental and electronic sounds.
The album is the centrepiece of Camerata Mediolanense's "Petrarca project," which is conceptually based on the poetry of 14th century scholar, poet, and humanist Francesco Petrarca, one of the fathers of Italian language and literature. The project was initiated by the CD single "99 Altri Perfecti" (2011) and is closed by the CD single "Vergine Bella," which are both included in the art-book edition of "Vertute, Honor, Bellezza."

Quite an elusive album issued on the obscure Iller label from Rome. I don’ know much about Serra except that he was a jazzman who worked as a session player for various Italian jazz labels. I believe he was a drummer. Atmosfere is an incredible incidental set of hypnotic tribal and psychedelic-baroque mood music. Sometimes reminding me of the German composers Siegfried Schwab and Manfred Hubler’ score to Jess Franco’ legendary cult film, Vampyros Lesbos. The music is very similar to Piero Umiliani’ trilogy of superb erotic-exotic scores, Il Corpo, La Ragazza Fuoristrada and La Ragazza Dalla Pelle Di Luna.

NEW YORK, N.Y. -- The choir of Trinity Church in New York City, under the direction of Larry King, has just completed two records, A Recital of Renaissance Motets and American Anthems, and With Angels and Archangels.
The Archangels album consists of music to be sung by congregations, with accompaniment by choir and instruments, with one side devoted to new music developed at Trinity Church.
The renaissance album offers seven motets by Palestrina, Victoria, DeLassus, Dering and Philips, along with four anthems written since 1950 by Leslie Bassett, Richard Felciano, George Rochberg, and Lukas Foss.
Trinity's choir is a small "chamber choir" fully equipped tonally and musically to present the bulk of the great repertoire of church music.
Mr. King, who has been organist and choirmaster since 1968, changed the choir from men and boys by adding women's voices. "To preserve the aura historically associated with the world's greatest sounds in liturgical music," Mr. King said, "we carefully chose sopranos with natural clear voices, or those, who because of excellent training, could blend with this sound. The mixture of a male alto with female altos made further contribution to a pure, liturgical sound."
In 1973, Mr. King began an experimental music project with a performing-composing trio called the Archangel. Besides Mr. King, the others were Dr. Dora Schively (an MD in Neurology with a music degree from Julliard School of Music) and Glenn Billingsley, a graduate student in sacred music at Union Theological Seminary.
After Mr. Billingsley's graduation and subsequent move from New York, Archangel added guitarist Louis Gimenez, drummer Zachery Margaritis, and bassist John Rotondi.
All of the music on the Archangel album can be performed with or without the choral parts and instruments. The recording gives some variations.
The People's Music on side two is recorded only with the organ, whereas The Missia Archangelus uses the full symphonic rock band. The album also contains a concert version of a simple humntune called Creation using a text by Isaac Watts depicting the creation of the world with an interlude of sounds of nature including waves, rain and other.
Mr. King said of the recordings: "Trinity's cathedral-like proportions and acoustics are best suited for early, unaccompanied music, and hence renaissance music has become the choir's specialty.
"Trinity's commitment to things contemporary have made important new music a secondary specialty, and quite unique in a society in which the church generally insists on being bathed in the comfortable sounds of the 19th century."
Both recordings were made on the Columbus Day weekend in 1974 in hopes that the holiday subway schedule would provide for a cleaner tape. "In spite of our hopes", Mr. King said, "the sessions were plagued with disruptions from the eight subway routes behind and in front of the church.
"Several trains defied splicing and filtering, and will pass through the listener's living room if he or she has better than average playback equipment".
The records are available for $6 each from Trinity's Music Office (74 Trinity Place, New York, N.Y. 10006). An additional dollar for each is needed for postage and handling. (episcopalarchives.org)

L'Assemblea Musicale Teatrale (The Assembly of Musical Theatre) formed in Genoa, Italy at the beginning of 1975, after the dissolution of progressive rock group La Famiglia degli Ortega. The band, with original members Bruno Biggi, Alberto Canepa and Gianni Martini, came together with the intention of creating performances that combine Italian rock with a variety of theatrical and experimental musical components, with a strong focus on social and political lyrical themes, especially those that were important to student movement groups in the 70's. Their first shows were censored due to explicitly criticizing personalities in Genoa. The nine members involved in the group at different points released three very different albums throughout their four years of activity until their dissolution in 1979, but the project has since regrouped under vocalist Giampiero Alloisio, leading to a comeback release in 2002.

Of particular interest to progressive rock fans (and especially RPI enthusiasts) is their debut `Dietro le Sbarre' (Behind Bars). A suffocating mood, daring experimentation, intricate instrumental arrangements, classical charm, weary passionate vocals and avant-garde strangeness can all be found on this fascinating work, comparable to the more daring and darker Italian progressive albums of the 70's. Follow up album `Marilyn' (1977) appears in more of a folk singer/songwriter style, while `Il Sogno di Alice' (The Dreams of Alice) from 1979 is something a return to grander works with piano and strings, but as a mix of commercial, folk and adult pop/rock with slight proggy leanings.
