Psichiatria Primo Piano – Psichiatria Primo Piano (2013, Cassette, Italy)

Tracklist:
A. Cascata
B. Sollievo Dal Terrore

Recorded By – Stefano Iannone/ N. Ritter
Recorded 2012-2013 in Italy + Wisconsin

The haunter mastermind behind Spettro Family, takes us on an all-new journey. Psichiatria Primo Piano revels in the heights of Italian symphonic progressive keyboard music; but despite this cassette being well within that sub-tradition, it also looks towards a far beyond future. Throughout the album, while manic shifts in style and texture continue to churn and churn, they haphazardly orbit into a kaleidoscopic universe of musical miniatures. At times these vignettes begin as elaborate deconstructions of the syncopated structures of prog-rock, but just as quickly evolve into massive collages that can bring to mind anything from radio rock, kosmiche musik, death metal, nursery rhymes, library music, Skinny Puppy, Phillip Glass, The Residents, Goblin, Stockhausen, and on and on. Aided and enabled by contributions from Nathaniel Ritter (Circulation of Light, Kinit Her, et al), this composition moves fast and rushes past you like the end of a dream, full of colors ecstatic, tranquil, and grotesque. (Heathen Harvest)

Giuseppe Banfi, former keyboardist of Un Biglietto per l'Inferno started a solo career with an album in 1978. His own musical style is deeply inspired by the visionary sounds of Kosmische electronic music from Berlin. It features gorgeous spaced out synthesised soundscapes and floating minimal melodies. After the release of Galaxy my dear (1978), he published Ma, dolce vita (1979) and Hearth (1981) on Schulze's label, Innovative Communication.

Nino Nardini ‎– Musique Pour Le Futur (1971, LP, France)

An experimental, musique concrete, sci-fi masterpiece. Originally recorded for Crea Sound Ltd., a sub-label of Louis Delacour's Neuilly imprint, Musique Pour Le Futur finds the French composer, arranger, producer, possible time-traveler, and all around music library legend Nino Nardini experimenting with synthesizers, percussions, prepared piano, echo, and special effects. Fans of electronic oddities, eerie cinematic audio-landscapes, Piero Umiliani, Ruth White, Tod Dockstaeder or Bernard Parmegiani, will rejoice at this full-length musical adventure that could very well be the soundtrack for a film in which characters from a '70s Italian horror movie visit a distant (forbidden) planet from a '50s sci-movie. It's bizarre, hypnotizing, slightly spooky, always out-of-this-world, and goddamn brilliant. Nino Nardini, also known as Georges Teperino, had a very fruitful career in library music, much like longtime collaborator Roger Roger. He composed a very large amount of works for French and British libraries which continues to be featured in numerous programs (radio, TV, films) all around the world. His passion for electronic music experimentations began in the late '60s and kept going until the '80s.

In the mid-1990s, electronic and new age music composer Pneuma (Satoru Takazawa) unexpectedly shifted gears, leaving a series of tasteful recordings drenched in funereal mysticism, astrology, medievalism and pictorial symbolism. Supported by Akira, Shin Yamazaki (ex-Lacrymosa) and Yuko Suzuki, the formation adopted the unlikely name: Trembling Strain. With the help from other like-minded musicians, Pneuma & Co indulged in exotic exercises of color and space. Their appetite for trans-cultural combinations collated luscious mirages with Asian, Middle Eastern, African, medieval and Brazilian instruments. The results of this concoction are usually more than the sum of the parts and occasionally Trembling Strain added to the shortlist of the most accomplished ethnic atmospherics.

Originally released in 1981, this classic space music album is a rarefied blend of analog synthesizers, flutes and Lyricon by Bob Stohl and Kat Epple, who were pioneers in electronic music, New Age music, and audio technology. The original reel-to-reel master tapes were baked for “sticky shed syndrome,” transferred to digital, and remastered for this official remastered album release.

Recorded and composed in their 4-track reel-to-reel home studio, and released as a cassette on “Stargate,” Emerald Web’s own record label, “Valley of the Birds” became one of the band’s best-known albums. In order to create their signature thickly-layered timbres, the husband and wife duo served as their own recording engineers, while simultaneously playing an array of monophonic synthesizers, sequencers, and acoustic instruments.

The melodic brew of Fantasy, Space and New Age music features now-vintage analog synths including the Lyricon, a ground-breaking synthesizer/woodwind instrument developed in the early 70’s. The mouthpiece of this unique hybrid wind instrument reacts to lip and wind pressure to control additive synthesis which can be programmed to create a myriad of unique dynamic sounds.

Sensations' Fix – Boxes Paradise (1977, LP, Italy)

Tracklist:
A1. The Flu (4:20)
A2. Faux Batard (3:25)
A3. Boxes Paradise (Including Short Flights) (6:15)
A4. Voices (4:54)
B1. Mother's Day (7:24)

Musicians:
Bass – Matt Noble (A2, A3.b, A4), Richard Ursillo (A1, A3.a, B1 to B3)
Drums – Keith Edwards
Keyboards – Steve Head
Producer, Guitar, Vocals – Franco Falsini
Synthesizer – Cloud 9 (A3.b)

Listening today to the music produced by Sensations’ Fix, a project founded and directed by Franco Falsini in ‘70s, can’t just leave anyone indifferent. Already in the mid-‘60s, Falsini was full-time involved in musical activities: a tireless traveler and experimenter, an artist with uncommon curiosity and intuition, after having lived for some time in the United States and England, he finally established again in Italy where he gave shape to Sensations’ Fix and signed a contract with Polydor for the release of six records in five years. Often associated with the sound of Tangerine Dream and the so-called German ‘cosmic couriers’, Sensations’ Fix were much more than mere clones of something already existing.

“Boxes Paradise” is the fifth Sensations’ Fix album, originally released in 1977 and never officially reissued on vinyl to date. Musically, it follows the same path inaugurated on the previous “Finest Finger”, with an even more refined and elegant production, more structured and longer tracks (three out of seven exceeding the 6-minute length), all sung by an increasingly confident Franco Falsini. There are also various instrumental sections, guitar solos and ‘spacey-sounding’ keyboards reminiscent of the band’s previous records. A real gem that sounds fresh and ripe even today!

Simonetti - Pignatelli - Morante – Tenebre (1982, LP, Italy)

This pulse-pounding thriller score occupies an odd place in the history of Italian prog rock legends Goblin: although this isn't an official Goblin album, it was crafted by three of the group's four members under the moniker Simonetti, Morante, Pignatelli. Ironically, it has a stronger Goblin-esque feel to it than the last few official Goblin scores that proceeded it. It's no coincidence that this 1982 score marked a reunion with Dario Argento, the director who discovered them and pushed them to create their most memorable work. Tenebre covers the same gothic-inflected prog rock territory that Goblin pursued on previous Argento scores, except this time the sound is updated with an electronic edge that keeps its eye on early-'80s pop music trends. This newly updated approach is nicely defined by the title track, a pulse-pounding rock instrumental infused with an almost dance-friendly edge: it has the slashing guitar riffs and gothic organ swirls one would expect from a classic Goblin track, but also fleshes out the sound with new touches like vocoder-filtered vocals and programmed synthesizer riffs. Another standout track in this style is "Waiting Death," a reprise of the "Tenebre" theme that allows Claudio Simonetti to take center stage with his impressive chops on the organ. Other tracks take it a step further by taking a completely synthesized approach: The best of these is "Flashing," a densely layered synth epic that begins with creepy washes of spacy synthesizer and explodes into a gothic-sounding programmed synthesizer melody spiked with insistent drum machine beats. In short, Tenebre presents an ideal balance of horror atmospherics and rock muscle, and this makes it the finest post-'70s Goblin-related work.
