Note: This was the third concert of Henry Cow reunion tour. After the date of Forlì, the group is broken down to London for the last farewell to Lindsay Cooper. All together they have scattered the ashes in the Thames. Ashes that Sally Potter, partner of Lindsay, kept in her house

Area Sismica presenta

l’eccezionale riunificazione di una band che ha avuto un impatto epocale tra il ‘68 e il ’78 e che ha modificato radicalmente gli stilemi compositivi di buona parte della musica che ascoltiamo tutt’ora, gli HENRY COW, il cui ultimo concerto si è tenuto nel luglio del 1978. 

Nati dall’incontro tra Fred Frith e Tim Hodgkinson alla Cambridge University e con Chris Cutler e Lindsay Cooper come elementi stabili, la formazione si è via via evoluta. 

E proprio alla fagottista/oboista Lindsay Cooper, a distanza di un anno dalla sua prematura scomparsa, è dedicato questo progetto. 

Questa triste ricorrenza ha fatto si che tutti i membri della band abbiano trovato il modo di liberarsi dagli innumerevoli impegni, che non hanno mai permesso la reunion richiesta a gran voce da pubblico e critica. 

In un’epoca di grandi trasformazioni sociali, i membri degli Henry Cow hanno vissuto la loro vita artistica senza compromessi, rifuggendo dalle logiche commerciali che stavano dietro al mondo discografico e dai promoter dei concerti, che hanno tradito fin da subito lo spirito di qualsiasi elemento di rottura che muoveva e muove ogni forma d’arte. 

Questa loro radicalità non ha comunque evitato un impatto notevole in termini globali. La popolarità raggiunta è stata sfruttata dalla band per contagiare altre formazioni in questa lotta che prese il nome di Rock In Opposition. 

Sull’onda del RIO nacquero gruppi musicali in tutto il mondo, quali Art Zoyd, Univers Zero, Zamla Mammaz Manna, Aksaq Maboul, Etron Fou LeLouBlan (ai quali Area Sismica dedicò il suo primo festival) e gli italiani Stormy Six. 

I componenti del gruppo, una volta terminata l’esperienza con la band, hanno intrapreso percorsi che li ha portati ai vertici della musica attuale, alimentando ulteriormente il mito degli Henry Cow. 

Ad esempio Fred Frith ha dato origine a progetti fondamentali, quali Art Bears, Massacre, Skeleton Crew, Keep the Dog, Tense Serenity, the Fred Frith Guitar Quartet, Eye to Ear e ha composto per Arditti Quartet, Asko Ensemble, Ensemble Modern, ROVA Sax Quartet, Arte Quartett e tanti altri. 

Ha tutt’ora un’attività musicale frenetica nei 5 continenti, oltre che essere docente al Mills College di Oakland (California) e all’Accademia Musicale di Basilea (Svizzera). 

Chris Cutler, oltre a proseguire nella carriera in qualità di musicista – come ad esempio con i superlativi Cassiber, Art Bears, News from Babel, Pere Ubu e brevemente nei Gong – è una figura fondamentale per tutti gli ambiti contemporanei per aver fondato l’etichetta indipendente Recommended Records, tra le più importanti label attualmente in attività. 

Anche Tim Hodgkinson ha mantenuto un’attività di grande rilievo, collaborando con Lol Coxhill, Tom Cora, John Zorn, Evan Parker, Catherine Jauniaux, Charles Hayward, ecc. e creando formazioni quali K-Space e Konk Pack e innumerevoli progetti legati all’improvvisazione musicale. 

Ci limitiamo a citare questi tre membri fondamentali degli Henry Cow, ai quali si sommano le esperienze chilometriche di tutti gli altri musicisti che nella serata del 23 novembre ridaranno vita a:

Questo progetto non è da vedere come una ripartenza della band, è un vero e proprio episodio unico, aumentando la portata dell’evento, già storico di per sé. 

Area Sismica proporrà a Forlì uno dei tre eventi previsti (gli altri due accadranno in Inghilterra) e attesi da così tanto tempo. 

Un bellissimo suggello sulla nostra venticinquennale attività. 

Questo evento è dedicato a Pierantonio Pezzinga.

Contraction ‎– Contraction (1972, LP/CD, Canada)

"Contraction was formed by musicians accompanying keyboardist Franck Dervieux on his ground breaking Dimension M" album in 1972, namely Yves Laferriere (bass), Christiane Robichaud (vocals), Michel Robidoux (guitar), and Christian St-Roch (drums). They were joined that same year by Robert Lachapelle (keyboards), Robert Stanley (guitar), Rawn Bankley (guitar), Marcel Huot (drums), Denis Farmer (drums), and Carlyle Miller (sax/flute). At the end of 1972, Contraction released their self-titled debut album, in both French and English versions. (note: this is the French version) The album took its inspiration from where Dervieux had left off prior to his tragic bout with cancer. Thus, Contraction can be considered the spiritual continuation of one of Quebec's founding fathers of progressive rock, and his prodigies did not disappoint. Être Dieu: opéra-poème, audiovisuel et cathare en six parties (French for "Being God: a Cathar Audiovisual Opera-Poem in Six Parts") is a self-proclaimed "opera-poem" written by Spanish surrealist painter Salvador Dalí, based on a libretto by Manuel Vázquez Montalbán with music by French avant-garde musician Igor Wakhévitch. It was originally published in 1985.

The six-part work features Dalí as God, Brigitte Bardot as an artichoke and Catherine the Great and Marilyn Monroe do a striptease. It has been published in an extremely rare 3 LP box-set by a Spanish label. It was re-released in a regular 3CD box published by German-label Eurostar who subsequently went out of business, and there are few-to-no known performances of the work. Dalí painted "Self-Portrait" (1972) to mark the composition of the opera, which was later auctioned by the United States Customs Service after being seized after Colombian drug lords tried to use the painting to launder money.

OK, get ready to read about an amazing collectible item that Mojo found a decade ago and will appeal to the young, the old and mostly the bizarre demented hipster a-hole that has gobs of internet start up money or wall street back alley secret investments.  Occupy this, 

beatnik weirdo! Oh, but you will pay, you will pay dearly, my crazed lunatic. Go to the MojoPopArt store and empty your wallet on Etre Dieu by the ultra-talented and equally warped mind, hand and deranged soul of Salvador Dali.

Salvador Dali is the only painter who also wrote a libretto for an opera-poème in six parts called “Etre Dieu” meaning “To Be God”, a reflection of his own effed-up personality.  Dali began to write the libretto for this “opera” in 1927 together with Federico Garcia Lorca one afternoon in the Café Regina Victoria, Madrid.  They were likely dining on psychedelic Psilocybin mushrooms. In 1974 Dali made a record of the opera in Paris for which Igor

 Wakhevitch wrote the music and the Spanish writer Manuel Vazquez Montalban made the libretto. But this aint no fantasy island you dwarf-minded art fanatic.  During the recording, Dali refused to follow Montalban’s text word by word and began to improvise saying “Salvador Dali never repeats himself”.  Mojo also never repeats himself so listen up and learn something, you sick dumbasses.

The twisted score by Igor Wakhevitch for Salvador Dali’s audiovisual opera poème cannot by expressed by Mojo in words. This “music” will haunt your soul, screw your brain, and leave you homeless with a stray mangy cat your only friend. Listen to this opera more than once and you will be eating chalupas out of garbage cans in the Haight. This is an obsessive, decadent, surrealist, provocative, grotesque, erotic musical comedy with Salvador Dali narratives and improvisations (in French). The music perfectly serves Dali and other actors’ voices with a medley of strange synthesizer loops, tape manipulations, creepy lysergic ambiences, expressionist string orchestra arrangements and percussive abstractions. Do you like Moog meets Twilight Zone on a combo of meth and cannabis? If so this is your 

 nightmare of choice, you silly little monkey. This is clearly a visual work for the ears and is gorgeously impregnated of mental pictures and dreamlike suggestions. An intriguing, ambitious audiovisual exhibition that remains entirely avant gardist with a plethora of ideas and a different atmosphere for each scene. It is not at all a progressive rock classic but a historical phenomenon with a rather unique eccentric abstract musical painting. But there is a prog-rock part played by a band featuring J.P. Castelain, J.J. Flety, Didier Batard, François Auger,J. L. Bentolila and M. Ripoche.

You all know the mustaschioed Dali for his surreal paintings that include hidden images and erotic contortions.  But who is this nutty Igor? Igor Wakhévitch is a French-born composer who released a series of studio albums in the 1970s and composed the music for the Salvador Dalí opera Etre Dieu. He is a relatively unknown composer but gained a small cult following through praises from Nurse with Wound (on the list of influences in their first album), Michael Gira from The Swans and a review of one of Igor’s studio albums by Dominique Leone for a feature on Pitchfork Media entitled “It Was the Strangest Record I Had Ever Heard”.  It proves that strange people flock together.  Ever seen a goth by him/herself? There is always at least two morose, black-eyed Bauhaus lovers walking down your idyllic suburban sidewalk or trolling the metro zoo.  Grandpa saying “what’s that, Martha?”  But Mojo digresses.  Mojo apologizes for these indulgences.

Mojo heard that there is a hidden message when this score is played backwards. It could be Satan attempting demonic possession of your godless soul or maybe Colonel Sanders crying from the grave over the A&W KFC fast food combo store that wrecked his chain.

Kostarev Group ‎– Works 1978-2006 (2006, CD, USSR)

The ultra-long stint and some three decades of history of Kostarev were finally taped in an archival album in 2006, ''Works 1978 - 2006'' (private), which contains pieces, spanning from Kostarev's baby steps back in late-70's and ends up in the opening track, which was recorded in 2006. Kostarev's diversity, instrumental ability and pure talent are all taped in this sound document, which overly sounds a bit heavier and dark compared to the previous live release, but is largely based on the same fundamentals, having a wide team of musicians, handling keyboards, flutes, strings, saxes and so on. This is an all instrumental work of technical Prog Fusion with symphonic and Avant Garde/ R.I.O. touches, technically reaching the highest of levels, not forgetting to offer some splendid moments of top musical construction and more mellow interplays. Excellent interplays between guitar, sax, flute, violin and cello with some very good keyboard smashing and synth torturing. Almost chaotic at moments, still very good in its own way, starting from rhythmic parts and folky surroundings to end up in monster Fusion instrumental battles and super-proggy textures. A tad less jazzy than ''Live@InProg'', almost equally interesting. apps79

Hard to find cosmic synth prog monster album by Jean-Pierre Decerf and friends. This is the library version even rarer than the Chicago 2000 commercial album version. One of the best Library in the genre. Musea Records reissued this production in 1990, featuring two additional bonus tracks recorded at a 1987 reunion.

Though this is ostensibly an "audio only" release, there is minimal video content on the Blu-ray, encoded via AVC. It's simple things like an animated screen featuring the original album cover with superimposed titles of whatever song is playing, or in the case of the bonus tracks, various (sometimes weird and wacky) promo pictures of Ian and the boys.

MOSAIK was more a collective led by guitarist/keyboardist/flutist Janne Persson than a proper band. It can be partially considered as an ATLAS off-shoot, since Persson himself and three of his collaborators (for two tracks in the entire album) were part of the aforesaid group that released the "Blå Vardag" album in 1979, one of the most brilliant releases ever in the history of Sweden's prog rock. In fact, one of the bonus tracks included in the digital edition of ATLAS' only album also appears here in MOSAIK's eponymous 1982 release in a slightly stripped version. But that's where all relation ends, since the offering of MOSAIK happens to be a mixed bag of pastoral, jazz-prog, acoustic folk and chamber-rock: there is a certain symphonic element in places (the essential element in ATLAS), but it works mostly as a convenient ornament for the moment and not as a relevant sonic factor. "Mosaik" is, as I said, a mixed bag, but a great mixed bag, full of musical ideas that are as good as they are varied. Just like the mother band ATLAS, MOSAIK was short lived and only released one album, which happens to be a potential collector's item in prog circles due to the fact that it hasn't been released on CD format yet. Fusioon ‎– Minorisa (1975, CD, Spain)

Minorisa is the third album by the Spanish band Fusioon. This album is mainly great instrumental progressive with lots of mood and tempo changes. Some strange, but interesting vocal arrangements occur occasionally. In essence the music focuses around melodic guitar and keyboard interplay, but paradoxically there is always a slight dissonance or angularity lurking that gives the music a great ominous feel. To me Fusioon sounds like nobody else, but you might hear elements of Gentle Giant, Pulsar and 70's Italian art rock. At the end of the album, there is interesting use of keyboards/sequencers and almost unrecognizable processed guitar, which create a creepy, unsettling atmosphere. The influence of Klaus Schulze or Tangerine Dream seems to be present here. A superb album with (little or) no flaws. (Gnosis)

This second album – released in 1974 – by Fusioon is one of the masterpieces from the 70s Catalan / Spanish psychedelic / progressive scene.
Produced by the great Josep Llobell, you’ll find here plenty of Hammond, Moog, effects, solid rhythm section, distorted lead guitar, highly inventive arrangements…
