Despite having never played live, they created one of the most beautiful works of electronic/new age music, which is their self titled 1988 release. This is an obligatory album in the collections of anyone who appreciates the genre".

Carioca & Devas – Mistérios Da Amazônia (1980, LP, Brazil)

Underground musician Carioca left behind his electrical past in Progressive Rock in order to search for new expressions in Brazilian music. His first album is a fully acoustic, instrospective voyage into the world’s greatest Rainforest, featuring 12-string guitar, mandolin, zither, tabla, flute and self-made percussion instruments. Carioca is the term used to describe those who originate from Rio de Janeiro. But, in fact, there’s only one Carioca in the music scene in Brazil: Ronaldo Leite de Freitas, who took up this nickname in São Paulo after relocating from his native Rio de Janeiro to study music at University. Recorded in 1980, Mistérios da Amazônia is also, at least to our knowledge, one of the first crowd-funding initiatives in the Brazilian music scene. Carioca, lacking the resources to pay for the studio and manufacturing fees, sold the album to fans, friends and independent record stores before having recorded it. Carioca’s first work is a fascinating one of a kind album, certainly difficult to classify. Often compared to the path set by musicians such as Egberto Gismonti or Naná Vasconcelos, who were always seeking new musical expressions whilst retaining a Brazilian character. In spite of what the music might suggest, Carioca hadn’t yet experimented with the introspective power of the Amazon’s sacred root - he would have his first life-changing experience in 1987. "All of a sudden, it all made sense. In 1987 I finally lived what I had recorded seven years earlier", in his own words. Drawing inspiration from the folklore of the Amazon and Brazil’s north eastern regions, the six self-penned compositions that form the album shape an introspective voyage into the Amazon - a part of Brazilian culture that Carioca had researched but not yet lived first-hand. Percussionist Sérgio Otanazetra, who had also moved to São Paulo from Bahia in order to pursue a career in music, played several percussion instruments (some of which he had built himself) and provided a solid knowledge of folkloric regional traditions. Zé Nazário, a prominent percussionist who had already played with some of Brazil’s biggest artists, such as Hermeto Pascoal or Milton Nascimento, joined the recording of Mistérios da Amazônia playing Tabla.

On 1968 he played in a band called VOX POPULI, that later would become SOM IMAGINÁRIO. In 1970, and now living in England, he used to be a fan of bands such as: PINK FLOYD, LED ZEPPELIN and GENESIS, who would have great influence on his musical production. Within the next few years, MARCO ANTONIO ARAUJO studied guitar and cello in Rio de Janeiro.
In 1977, once again in Belo Horizonte, he joined the symphonic orchestra and soon (1980) his first album, "Influências" was released. With only six instrumental tracks, he had already achieved an amazing sense of balance and created a personal style.
MARCO ANTONIO ARAUJO is a classic when it comes to brazilian prog, and also a highly recomended artist for anyone who likes both symphonic rock and prog folk.

Willy Verdaguer, while Argentinean by birth, spent most of those years working in Brazil with his group Humahuaca. While most of the music here was written and performed between '76 and '79, it was all re-recorded in '93, and released last year. The music here is a flavorful jazz-rock, injected with symphonics and spiced with rhythmic and flamenco influences, actually not far from the likes of Crucis, but with a bit more local color and unbridled jazz energy. Other points of comparison might be mid-period Kraan or early Transit Express, given the overt penchant for funkiness (as in "Galho de Arruda" or "Jogo da Memoria") and melodic savvy (as with the slower "Montanhas"), maybe even a touch of Banda Elastika. The seven-piece lineup features Verdaguer on bass, plus guitars, drums, keyboards, sax, flute, and percussion. Most of the nine tracks are instrumentals in the five-to-seven minute range, high energy jammers with plenty of sax and flute soloing. The compositions include plenty of hairpin turns and brilliant melodic mood shifts. Three tracks that don't seem to belong: the title track and a bluesy number "Rara Vez" that closes the disc, both vocal tunes sung by guest vocalist and producer Billy Bond, and "Pulomelu," an eleven minute instrumental suite that reminds me more of the Brazilian band Quantum on their self-titled debut than anything else on this album — yet it was that track that caught my ear on the first listen, while the others took an additional play or two to discover. In all, though, this one's a winner, heartily recommended for all fans of high-energy jazz-rock music. (exposé)

After the long praising review for his debut album, I don't have many words to describe this. Following the great zeuhlesque concept album, obviously a masterpiece and one of my top 5 albums of all time, Clara Crocodilo, Arrigo returns with Tubarões Voadores 5 years later. And what about this one? I can't say it's better than the previous one. The direction changed but it's still genial as damn. The proposal of the album was introduce dodecaphonism, weird prog narrative, and other absurd techniques on popular and different music including 80s rock, ethereal, synthpop, MPB, samba, and more. The results are tracks even more inacessible to the common listener. Just like the first album, the whole band and the female vocals are pretty good and unusual. It's a must check to avant-garde fans, but I still would reccomend Clara Crocodilo at first (very different style though). (progarchives)

Solid private press Symphonic Prog from Brazil, comparable to compatriots LOCH NESS, TEMPUS FUGIT, BLEZQI ZATSAZ and yet another act from the country to have a brief career in the early-90's.Topos Uranos' material sits well along the lines of 70's Symphonic Progressive, especially GENESIS, and offers elaborate and lush arrangements with sweet piano, HACKETT-ish electric guitar and some MARILLION-styled texts, atmospheric synthesizers with occasional bombastic plays.Largely instrumental with limited space for vocals, but wide enough for melodic passages, emotional patterns and flashy exercises. The CD reissue comes along with some more bonus tracks.Guitarist Arthur Nogueira ran the Projeto Caleidoscópio for some time with his wife Analu Paredes, while bassist Jorge Mathias can be seen on the 2006 Quaterna Réquiem DVD.
Independent CD/LP release. (apps79)
