L'imbroglio – Krar / Qelt (2007, CD, Italy)

Krar and Qelt are two separate works for trio, each subdivided in several parts or segments. Presented in the booklet as "improvised sonic thoughts", the music is indeed about free form, rhythmic minimalism or slowly raising explosions with a noisy edge (the guitarist makes an important use of his jacks and amp, the electronics are used to morph the sounds or alter their shapes), disturbing or unquiet atmospheres, etc... Common to the elaboration of the two pieces is the presence of drummer Lucio Bonaldo (also founder of the band) and guitarist Gi Gasparin; the main difference between the two pieces will have to be found in the third member, Emiliano Brescacin (bass and electronics) on Krar, trumpetist Enrico Antonello on Qelt. The music makes an important use of atonality, dissonances, spacy sounds, percussive rumbling, fractal playing; not easy to categorize in any box, it is anyway imo not very far from the musical universe of a band like Mexican Decibel and certainly NOT for the fainted heart! L'Imbroglio is an Italian band based in the Venezian area, with 3 releases in own name made between 2005 and 2010.

YoungPumpkin's original notes: Some places this gig was announced as "Reunion Tour". IMHO, this is an ongoing development. As far as I know, Hatfield and the North never performed before with double drums. I consider this as an experiment which is definitely succeeded. Enjoy as much as I did!

Electric Piano, Clavinet, Twelve-String Guitar [Acoustic 12 String] – Ralph Towner
Tenor Saxophone [Electric], Soprano Saxophone, Flute [Alto], Effects [Echoplex, Wah Wah Pedal] – Clive Stevens

Atmospheres is a project by Clive Stevens, who plays mostly pedal-effect-altered woodwind instruments, but his compadres is one of the most impressive and prestigious line-up ever in the world or JR/F, where he's probably the lesser-known individual. Indeed, not only is there Oregon's Ralph Towner (keyboards and devices) and Mahavishnu Orchestra's Billy Cobham and Rick Laird (drums & bass respectively), but also the guitar pair of John Abercrombie and Steve Khan 'can you imagine' The line-up is completed by percussionist Harry Wilkinson, and the first album was recorded in 73 and released in early 74 on Capitol with an uncommitting artwork sleeve. The result is a steaming JR/F that sometimes from improvs to dissonant free jazz, but this extreme is occasional.

A second album Voyage To Uranus was released at the end of 74, but the awesome line-up couldn't be kept, so only Towner and Abercrombie remained in anotherwise fairly different ensemble. Musically however, this second album was well within the continuation of the first album, still dishing the same red-hot fusion. Sadly that second album would signal the end of the group. Clive Stevens would not record another album as a leader until the closing of the century, when he would release two in a couple of years time. Sadly the two Atmospheres album have never (as of early '10) not receive a Cd reissue, which is a complete shame given the all-)star line-up of the first lp. (progarchives)

Instrumental Progressive Rock with strong guitar, flutes, piano and some mellotron with Jazzy overtones (their sole release).
Starting off as a cover band in Eastern Canada, Moonstruck quickly morphed into a tight progressive outfit playing small live gigs in the region. However, without a recording contract, the group privately recorded/ pressed these 13 tracks at Solar Audio & Recording (*SAR) studios in Halifax, composing all their own tracks, self-producing and self-financing the effort on their own "Lunatunes" label, reportedly pressing only around 500 copies.
* Solar is well known in Canadian vinyl collectors' circles for having pressed some of Canada's rarest LP's to come out of the Atlantic provinces (Blue Max, Happy Dolls, Moonstruck, Molly Oliver (EP), etc).
* Original founding members, drummer Dean MacDonald and bassist Bo Hanson left the band just before this album was recorded.
