In January 83' Tafel put together the first live version of Terraced Garden with Darrell Flint on bass, Scott Weber on drums and Jody Mitchell on guitar, joined a bit later by Simon Jacobs on violin.Despite having a hard time at the first stages, they built a good cult following with impressive performances, including members changing instruments on stage. All four were present on the band's next album ''Braille'' (1984, Melody & Menace Records), which also features guest performances by Ian Colvin on flute/sax, Don Dingwall on piano and Michael Fitzgerald on French horn. I really doubt Echolyn have never heard of Terraced Garden. Both bands sound extremely similar with a common taste for quirky still polished Prog Rock music, drawing influences from Classical Music, Folk and Jazz Fusion. While the material is rather mellow, the instrumental depth is huge, not too electric, but mostly based on solid interplays between keyboards, violin and acoustic guitar.Again, the tracks are rather short, but long enough to offer splending instrumental passages, Gentle Giant-like vocal experiments and highly symphonic arrangements. Now are a good comparison as well, while nothing sounds like 1984 in this work.Really daring and completely fashionless stuff.
