The show is actually a succession of short tracks with Skeleton Crew performing unparalleled and unequaled complex instrumental songs, disrupting common songwriting schemes whatsoever and particularly normal live performance configuration. Dave Newhouse of The Muffins is joining on saxophone and additional drums, though the
core duo of Frith+Cora was able to perform on several instruments at the same time as evidenced on their innumerable other live recordings. The musical irony in Skeleton Crew is comparable only to Negativland’s first LPs of the same period. For instance, at 6:30 in side A, a John Philip Sousa symphonic march is played as ironic background noise and at 18:00, Ronald Reagan is heard backward reading his famous quote: ‘We’re still free in America’. Additionaly, the trio is able to find its way through various musical genres, passages in this live recording verging on the experimental, noise or concrète music, while elsewhere the music is blues, avant rock or system music. Occasionaly, a song from their first 1984 LP ‘Learn to Talk’ is played in a more or less recognizable form. There is a possibility this cassette was issued as a parallel release with their first album to gather them more tour dates especially in Europe. These guys were undubitably great showmen. SoulenginE – Mind Colours (2012, CD, Italy)

To find the origins of this Milan based band, we only need to travel back to 2007, when the skilled guitarist Ettore Salati and the virtuoso keyboardist contacted Nando de Luca and Giacomo Pacini and together forms SoulenginE, a Classical Italian band with a modern Symphonic sound carefully blended with hints of Jazz, Psychedelia and everything a good Proghead loves.

It's important to mention that Ettore is well known among Progressive Rock listeners, being that he was founder of the Italian Neo Prog band THE WATCH, and Fabio was invited to play Moog in their third album "Primitive" (2007). But their approach is absolutely different in SoulenginE, where they embrace RPI oriented Symphonic with a modern twist.

After a couple of EP's, their official debut "Mind Colours" has reached the stores in 2012, and for what can be listened, I dare to vaticinate them a long and prosper career in this new millennium, because they have the talent and compositional skills, the rest is only luck. (Progarchives)

Nino Nardini ‎– Musique Pour Le Futur (1971, LP, France)

An experimental, musique concrete, sci-fi masterpiece. Originally recorded for Crea Sound Ltd., a sub-label of Louis Delacour's Neuilly imprint, Musique Pour Le Futur finds the French composer, arranger, producer, possible time-traveler, and all around music library legend Nino Nardini experimenting with synthesizers, percussions, prepared piano, echo, and special effects. Fans of electronic oddities, eerie cinematic audio-landscapes, Piero Umiliani, Ruth White, Tod Dockstaeder or Bernard Parmegiani, will rejoice at this full-length musical adventure that could very well be the soundtrack for a film in which characters from a '70s Italian horror movie visit a distant (forbidden) planet from a '50s sci-movie. It's bizarre, hypnotizing, slightly spooky, always out-of-this-world, and goddamn brilliant. Nino Nardini, also known as Georges Teperino, had a very fruitful career in library music, much like longtime collaborator Roger Roger. He composed a very large amount of works for French and British libraries which continues to be featured in numerous programs (radio, TV, films) all around the world. His passion for electronic music experimentations began in the late '60s and kept going until the '80s.

Finisterre, at the end of the pilgrims+ road to Santiago de Compostela, is the "Estrela Oscura" (Dark Star), the last star in the Milky Way. We still do not know for how long it had been a mysterious point of magnetism, even before Christianity, that lured many different cultures of Indo-European peoples into the Galician lands. This was a seed for the development of a single music, all of it stemming from magical motivations. This work is a small anthology of traditional pieces from different times and origins. For its making, we started from the actual scores of the different collections of songs. We did not aim at doing it in an orthodox way but rather using (in a subjective manner) the sensitivity this land has as a guide.

French drummer Jacques Thollot started playing with jazz bands at an early age towards the end of the 1950's, being recognized as a prodigy child. One can find clips of him from 1958 playing the drums at the age of 13 in a night club with a jazz band (Barney Wilen Trio). He would pass his teenage years in this surrounding developing his musical vision which would be much wider and more experimental than what he used to play during that time.

His first release, which is also the most striking one, released on the Futura Records in 1971, is called "Quand Le Son Devient Aigu, Jeter La Giraffe A La Mer"; it is a splendid example of spacey-like, fragile and imaginative compositional style fusing jazz, electronic experiments, psychedelic elements and rock together, culminating in a blissful listening experience and it has earned Thollot the place in the NWW list.avant

Thollot went on to release 4 more albums, "Watch The Devil Go" (1975), Résurgence (1977), Cinq Hops (1978) and most recently Tenga Niña (1996). Whereas the first album is the one of most interest to those looking for the avant-prog/experimental side of his, the others are more jazz-oriented and include vocals. Of these the most notable and recommended is Cinq Hops with its more structured and direct approach (compared to Quand Le Son.) and contains and female-vocals fronting in a chant-like style with the rest of the band providing an ethereal atmosphere, making this a very pleasant album to listen to with a touch of Magma-like zeuhl elements and style.
