Self Released CD

Ken WATSON is an American jazz guitarist and composer. Originally active in the 70's with a band called BLACK MARKET, Ken started recording his first LP in the 80's with a full band consisting of David WEBB, Buddy STEWART, Greg MCPHERSON and Terry MORGAN. Inspired by jazzy progressive rock the likes of HAPPY THE MAN he privately released 'Assembly' in 1985.
The group didn't continue on after the 80's and WATSON wasn't in it for the life of a rock musician, but he continued to compose music for personal reasons and released more records a decade later on his own. With instruments being replaced by their digital counterparts the later records while still jazzy are more keyboard and electronic oriented. (progarchives)

It's musicians like Ken Watson, that really make hearing new progressive music so enjoyable. Here is man that because of time restraints, and family obligations has to do music as a "side" hobby. And we are the beneficiaries is his prodigeous talents. This is Kens' third cd to date, and again, he doesn't disappoint the listener, he has taken the time out of his busy life to offer this cd to the unsuspecting prog public. What he does at his personnel studio is amazing, the fact that he is doing this music as the sole performer is hard to believe.
Musically, he has a strong emphasis on radical keyboard arrangements, with some of the most perplexing layering you can imagine, he also is an excellent guitarist, and apparently a fantastic producer/engineer. Of course working alone means he is using digital drums, but on this cd you wouldn't even notice, as you will be immersed in the songs depth and details, and he is using a very nice sounding drum programmer. One could easily listen to this and hear strong echoes of Happy the Man, Zappa, UK, and Shawn Lane.
It's sad that todays demands can take a major talent like Ken Watson, and keep him from persuing his calling as a musician, and fronting a band, but the silver lining is that todays technology and homestudio gear has allowed people like KW the opportunity to be creative and get heard. In summary, Ken has delivered three solid recordings thus far, and he remains dedicated and faithful to his progressive calling on each of these. The lovers of highly sophisticated, complex, and deep music will find Ken Watsons' music a great addition to their collections. (MJBrady)

Recording sessions at the Hoche / Barclay studio. I used for the first time the Moog (big one!). More than an hour to install it! On this record, I had fun while keeping my seriousness because the keyboard partition was not caviar! I got out of it anyway. Like Giant, it was produced for commercial reasons but as we only sold five and a half copies, the big boss realized there and then a Library version (MP 82) which had success in that form. (J. Nilovic)

Elliott Sharp ‎– Fractal (1986, LP, Usa)

Tracklist:
A1. Singularity (4:51)

A3. Diffractal 4:44)
A4. Turbulence (5:06)

Trombone – Ken Heer
Trombone, Bass Trombone – James Staley

Fractal contains some of Elliott Sharp's music at its best, which is to say, brutal. "Singularity," which opens the album, virtually sums up the Sharp aesthetic: a fusillade of dense, almost barbaric percussion overlaid with the leader's splintered guitar sounding as though it's ricocheting off the interior walls of a dark, dangerous underground lair. The bottom-heavy ensemble -- including two drummers, two trombonists, and two musicians wielding instruments of Sharp's own design (the pantar and the slab) -- is well attuned to this primeval course, insistently avoiding any hint of virtuosity or glibness. And the remainder of the record stays on that same bitter course, relentlessly pounding out rough-hewn rhythms, gnarled enough that Sharp's solo lines don't so much ride over them as encrust them. Crucially, he refuses to take a breather, driving the band through the closing 15-minute "Not-Yet-Time" (a dance score!), resolutely harsh and unbowed. Unlike many subsequent albums where Sharp nodded in this musical direction or that (punk, Captain Beefheart, dub, etc.) or over-accentuated his mathematical tendencies, he's in his own unique world here and Fractal, with the possible exception of the magnificent Larynx, stands as his most powerful, singular statement. Highly recommended.  (Brian Olewnick)

One of the effects of reform within the Catholic Church in Italy during the 1960s was the emergence of the ''Messa beat'' (literally translated as ''Mass beat''), a branch of Christian music with particular appeal to young people due to its combination of rock and religion. Its spread during the 1970s resulted in a flood of albums inspired by Gospel texts with accompaniment of traditional and electric instruments. The discs were produced by religious labels and sold through specialist religious bookshops but were issued in such limited numbers that they went virtually unnoticed and consequently are nowadays extremely rare. In the vanguard of Christian progressive bands were MESSAGGIO 73, GENFUOCO, and QUEL GIORNO DI UVE ROSSE. However with ''Trasparente'', LA SORGENTE produced what is arguably the finest of all the religious albums, progressive or otherwise. There is some dubiety regarding the album's year of release but most sources have it as 1981.

In spite of the harsh economic recession and the socio-political turmoil of The Years of Lead, Italian progressive releases of the late 1970s and early 1980s tended to be of the melodic sort and ''Trasparente'' epitomises this with its delicate acoustic-based fusion of chamber-pop, Mediterranean folk and soft RPI. The cover artwork of the dove of peace set against a sky-blue background gives a clue to the type of music therein, and every song speaks of pious sentiment with lyrics such as: ''I am here, my voice will reach Your ear, and You will hear my love for You now.'' LA SORGENTE fully explore the creative possibilities opened by the meeting of rock music with the realm of faith; the outcome is an intimate work full of restrained yet richly sensuous melodies that reflect the pastoral setting of the lyrics. These are complemented by refined instrumental passages where RPI features are obvious, with the most common artifice being the classic combination of flute, violin and piano. Synthesizer and organ occasionally mingle with 12-string guitar, which is the album's other main unifying characteristic.

''Trasparente'' is considered extremely rare and Paolo Barotto, in his reference book of Italian prog and psych ''Il Ritorno del Pop Italiano'', gives it a rarity rating of ''almost impossible to find.'' At the moment the chance of a re-release seems remote despite Barotto also proclaiming ''Trasparente'' as ''the best of the religious albums'' and stating that ''once discovered it will become one of the most sought after collectables.'' As such, LA SORGENTE are probably destined for legendary cult status although they wouldn't be out of place alongside CELESTE in the forefront of soft RPI bands. (seventhsojourn)

Easily one of the most trippy albums ever from Andre Popp – a French arranger who's usually best known for his lounge recordings of the 50s and 60s – but who's working here in a more psych-inspired mode that's right up there with the work of Jean Claude Vannier and Michel Colombier! As you may know, André Popp is one of the most prominent musicians/conductors/arrangers from France. Originally released in 1972 on the AZ label, Le Coeur En Fête, an amazing masterpiece of groovy jazz funk / easy listening / progressive pop sounds featuring funky rhythms, cool guitar licks (courtesy of Le Système Crapoutchik / Eden Rose's Jean Pierre Alarcen!), sitar, Moog, killer Hammond organ and flutes, is one of the rarest LPs in Popp's catalogue. It was released in France, Germany and Canada but sold out less than a year after its release and has surprisingly never been reissued until now. An LP that will appeal to those into the sounds of other classic French works like Pop Instrumental de France, Jason Havelock's Pop Symphony, Jean-Claude Vannier's L'Enfant Assassin des Mouches, William Sheller's Lux Aeterna, Michel Berger's Puzzle, Popera Cosmic or even Janko Nilovic's Pop Impressions or Psyc Impressions.

A superb, almost magical chamber music progressive set most similar to the masterpieces of Jacques Thollot, Cinq Hops, or French Mosaic. This is, obviously, a reissue from 2014 of unreleased material, entirely composed by Jean-Luc Chevalier, as you can easily see if you compare with the tracklist of his first, ST record (which oddly enough came out almost a decade later due to his involvement with Magma). That later record and others by him recycled many of these very worthy compositions but I think with a considerable diminution in progressiveness as might be expected from the late year.
