Experimental artist Michel F. Côté teams up with Tiari Kese for the release of ‘Botul à La Campagne’, his first album released through Squint Fucker Press. The new album sees Côté and Kese teaming up to offer a highly experimental musical experience, combining different elements of varying genres to great effect. Much of the album indulges in experimental notions, though elements of ambient, classical and jazz seem to seamlessly work their way into the tracks, offering up a very enjoyable album experience. There’s arguably a more subtle element to ‘Botul à La Campagne’, which never seems to overstep its mark at any point.

‘Botul à La Campagne’ offers up an interesting album experience, and one that leans towards the more accessible side of experimental music. Elements of different genres all come into play across the various tracks, though the album itself as a whole presents itself as a musical experience not limited by its own genres. The whole album seems to defy conventional genre classification in favour of pure creative experimental compositions. There seems to be elements of improvisation on the album, as could be expected of Côté, though at the same time there also seems to be real direction, and vision.

This latest release from Côté and Kese offers up an incredible musical experience, and one that seems to be oddly accessible for an album released through Squint Fucker Press. The album’s experimental notions do make the album a little odd in places, and thus this is perhaps a release that’s not for everyone, but those who are familiar with Côté’s work, and are open to his many different ideas and visions, expressed through his musical techniques, will most likely find ‘Botul à La Campagne’ to be one of the best releases this artist has to offer.

There’s an incredible amount being offered up on ‘Botul à La Campagne’, which takes ideas and brings out so much that the average musician wouldn’t think to do. Côté and Kese both manage to brilliantly bring forth so many different ideas and techniques, and string them all together into one coherent album package that just works. ‘Botul à La Campagne’ sees jazz music turn into dark ambient music turn into classical music without any notion or indication whatsoever. There’s some wonderful ideas being presented on the album, most of which work incredibly well and result in one of Squint Fucker Press’ most interesting album releases thus far. (The CD Critic)

Heretic ‎– 1984-88 (1994, CD, Japan)

Excellent compilation of Heretic's first two LP's from the 80's, three exceprts from their rare first album, the whole 2nd album plus an unreleased track. First tracks (band operated as a trio, always led by composer/multi-instrumentalist Hirofumi Kawahara) are somewhere between melodic Space Rock with electric guitar/synth and Ambient Music with cosmic synthesizers/electronics. Second album (Heretic as a five-pice band now) is mostly EM with a cosmic edge plus guitar-oriented complex Prog and touches of Fusion in the shorter tracks, while the first-ever published piece is somewhat abstract, guitar-driven, jazzy instrumental Rock in the vein of KING CRIMSON. Unique album indeed with a unique atmosphere as well. (apps79)

Dubbed “the Keyboard Philharmonic”, and directed by the Swiss master pianist/composer George Gruntz, this 1975 album features six of the greatest European jazz keyboardists of the period. French master Martial Solal, Englishman Gordon Beck, Germans Wolfgang Dauner and Joachim Kuhn, and Netherlander Jasper van’t Hof join Gruntz in a pianistic extravaganza of a particular sort, accompanied by the crack American bass and drum team of John Lee and Alphonse Mouzon. British critic Mike Hennessey termed the album “an anthology, in highly contemporary musical dress, of all those celebrated nostalgic dances of the thirties.” With all of the pieces composed by the various pianists, the high-octane play has more to do with 70’s fusion and the avant-garde than the musical mores of the Jazz Age. Rumba Orgiastica solo order: Gruntz/Kühn/Mouzon. English Moxplott coda duo: Dauner/Solal. Hymny Shimmy solo: Beck. Hal-Lucy-‘n-o’-One Step collective: Dauner/van’t Hof/Gruntz. Zookie Cookie solos: Dauner/Kühn/van’t Hof. Lookie Pookiesolos: Gruntz/Kühn/Lee. Tango Teclado solos: Dauner/van’t Hof. Tittie-Chickie-FitterbugDauner/Solo/Beck. Shoo-fly-Shuffle solos: Kühn/Mouzon. Charles’ Stone and Quickflip intro solo: van’t Hof, bridge duo: Dauner/Gruntz. A unique chance to hear some of Europe’s greatest keyboard stylists in a pianistic meeting of the minds.

A very cool album from keyboardist George Gruntz – and one that may well feature 2001 keys, given that the lineup is all keyboardists – with work from Gordon Beck, Jasper Van't Hof, Fritz Pauer, Martial Solal, and Joachim Kuhn! The set features a huge amount of Fender Rhodes – plus bass from Henri Texier and drums from Erich Bactragle – with a feel that's very much in the best MPS fusion moe of the time! (dustygroove)

Triple Zero is a French trio that plays aggressive instrumental progressive rock that bears a strong resemblance to King Crimson at their most aggressive, but also incorporates Zeuhl and various other avant-progressive influences. The band consists of Vincent Sicot-Vantalon on electronics, and former Shub Niggurath members Edward Perraud on drums and Frank Fromy on bass (though he must be playing guitar as well).
The disc starts off with a driving Crimson jam that is full of whooshing electronics. Perraud's drumming is a powerful force throughout the entire album, keeping the pace intense, and often frenzied, while the deeply thudding bass pounds and the varied keys and synths lay down both razor sharp Frippoid lines and bubbling freaky effects. "Irruption" is a fantastic combination of all the band's Crimson, Zeuhl, and RIO influences. A weird analogy but it's almost like Fripp playing guitar for Present with spaced out synths instead of piano. The spacey electronics mixed with the aggressive music played against a pace set by an impressive and energetic drummer is very much a trademark of Triple Zero's sound.
"Part IV" features some of the best searing electronics on the album, here filling the guitar role, and the synths cut loose like they were whipped up in a storm. The music has a metallic Frippoid edge and Perraud once again leads the way keeping the pace frantic and intense. There's also an untitled bonus track that is very different from the rest of the album. It features much more varied percussion from Perraud, as well as more varied electronics. We hear a bit of techno mania, plus lots of textural synths in the background. There are also bits that are more overtly Crimson than the other tracks, but this is primarily an electronica tune. After several minutes of silence during this 13 minute track the synths start to bubble again, soon joined by percussion which kicks in some wild electro beats that are part tribal, part hip-hop/techno, and driven by start-stop sequenced lines. An interesting tune.
In summary, Triple Zero combine the best of King Crimson with RIO and Zeuhl influences to create highly aggressive instrumental progressive rock that also features a healthy dose of freaky electronica. The result is a fresh and exciting sound that has recognizable influences but is totally Triple Zero's own sound. Highly recommended.

Osiris ‎– In The Mist Of Time (1980, LP, Japan)

Osiris / in the mist of time
Osiris / in the mist of time

Hiro Kawahara's pre-Heretic band. Many other recordings were also released on cassette between 1978-1982, under the names of Osiris, Astral Temple and Dr. Jekyll & Mr. Hyde. These are all hopelessly obscure and impossible to find.

While not exactly a pioneer of Japanese Experimental Music but certainly one of the most important figures of the underground Eastern-Asian Electronic scene, Hiro Kawahara started his music journey playing the guitar and then switching on keyboards with German synthesist Manuel Goettsching being his major influence. In 1978 he gave birth to the Osiris project, which was actually a pseudonym used by Kawahara. He released several cassette albums under this moniker but only one LP, the legendary ''In the mist of time''.As with most of his albums, this work was recorded in ten days during August 1980 at the Sound Of Poppy Studios with Goa on drums and Rosi on voice (pseudonyms for the pair of guest musicians appearing in the album). It was released later during the same year.

''In the mist of time'' is a beautiful work of melancholic, dreamy Electronic Prog with ethereal, spacey soundscapes created by Kawahara.According to his words, he was strongly inspired by nature and his walks through the mountains, and the album perfectly reflects Kawahara's feelings at the time.It often becomes very peaceful with cinematic textures and smooth drumming, other moments are dominated by Kawahara's cosmic synthesizers with a Berlin School-like flavor towards somber and atmospheric images.Sporadic, wordless vocals make the whole effort sounding even more impressive and the works of SENSATIONS' FIX and RICHARD SCHNEIDER JR. often spring to mind.As a guitarist Kawahara appears in several tracks to deliver loose and somewhat psychedelic solos, often in the abscence of any supporting instrument. The second side is more minimalistic with hypnotic electronics and sparse use of drums, but some pieces follow the likes of mellow, synth-based Electronic Rock with a few MIKE OLDFIELD influences in the background.

Kawahara finished his work as Osiris around 1982 and re-appeared a couple of years later with Heretic, another Electronic-spiced act, which released quite a few albums and compilations, mainly through the 80's and the 90's.

An albums, which seems destined to be tasted by vinyl collectors around the world.Melancholic and trully atmospheric Electronic/Psych Prog with some great soundscapes.Recommended. (apps79)

This is a very rare record from 1973 by two Japanese supergroups of renowned Jazz and Progressive rock musicians led by science-fiction and avant-garde author Yasutaka Tsutsui. It is a combination of cosmic jazz, psychedelic space-rock and free improvisation.
