Tamaki Hiroki is often considered as Japanese Jean-Luc Ponty, however he is known as a composer/player in the classic music scene rather than Ponty follower.
Tamaki tended to rock music in middle 1970s. He loved Keith Emerson at that time, and he wanted to make a rock album not a classical one. Time Paradox is the work where he evidently steps into progressive rock.
To my regret, SMT left only this one album. I suppose SMT is merely a project unit in the short term as Tamaki released a lot of albums after Time Paradox. Of his works, this is the only one of progressive rock in his discography and we have to think this is the most exceptional masterpiece for him.
Tamaki Hiroki & SMT is probablu unknown outside of Japan. If you know Jean-Luc Ponty, Mauro Pagani, Shaki etc you will find that they are somewhat close to this band. Tamaki refers to SMT as a fusion group in his home page. (Hideki)
