The performance also provided the first chance for Sanders to perform with The Plastic People of the Universe, the Czech band whose fight against the Czechoslovakian government received vocal support from The Fugs. This disc documents the performance, which sees Sanders returning to form with his signature blend of spoken word and poetry.

Tomografia Assiale Computerizzata began as a one-man-band hiding the multi-instrumentist and sound engineer Simon Balestrazzi, which would later join Kino Glaz, Kirlian Camera, Bron Y Aur.
His first LP under the name T.A.C. came out in 1983 (or maybe in 1982) and features a very peculiar, Nurse With Wound-ish sound interbreeding such diverse styles as no-wave, electronic experimentation, progressive rock, radical improvisation and post-punk.
The rattling, crunchy guitar sound isn't far from Fred Frith's distinctive style in his no-wave project Massacre, and the shattered jazzy orbits it follows are quite close too. The telluric funk-punk basslines contribute creating bony, deconstructed pieces with everchanging rhythms and meters. Then come the electronic incursions of polluted radio frequencies and background buzzes, which give the music an eerie, dismantled feeling.
The lyrics are often quasi-nonsensical, but reflect the aftermath of the strong political engagement of the Seventies. Repetition and obsessive rants are the key elements of Balestrazzi's neurotic vocal style.
T.A.C. sound is completed by occasional free saxophone bursts, atonal piano figures and sparse folkloric remindings. The final result is something between Henry Cow, This Heat, The Work, with a more sinister, industrial mood. (Il golpe e l'uva)

Originally released by Edigsa in 1972, the sophomore album by this great outfit led by Jordi Sabatés (Ocells del més enllà) took their jazz rock fussion sound one step further, diving deeper into the realms of seventies instrumental jazz. Recorded in the Gema and Odeon studios during spring 1972, featured a new Jarka line up: Sabatés himself on keys, Alfonso De Lucas on (bass) plus guitarist Daniel Somoza and drummer Tom Furgal, both from New York, where they had played with Chick Corea, Michael Gibbs a.o. Great electrified seventies jazz-rock sounds! Jordi Sabatés has been one of the most prolific artists from Catalunya and his solo carrier after Jarka has gained him a wide reputation amongst collectors and music lovers, mainly because of his 1975 LP Ocells del més enllà, but also to his other great albums of the era. The sound roots of what he became later are clearly heard in Jarka. Strictly limited to 500 copies. High quality gatefold sleeves reproducing the original artwork from 1972's first press on Edigsa.

Recorded At – Milano Recording Studios

A 15-piece group from Venezia, that can be hardly described as a prog band, Venetian Power were in fact a theatre group formed by composer Claudio Ambrosini to represent his The arid land play in northern Italy.
A musical group was also created by Ambrosini with danish guitarist Claes Cornelius (a popular session musician at the time in Italy) and an LP was released with the soundtrack. Among the musicians the former keyboardist of Le Stelle di Mario Schifano, Nello Marini.

The idea for the album came to producer and engineer Ermanno Velludo with Claes Cornelius (from The Blues Right Off) that was just coming back to Italy after a year in the USA, and they decided to help Claudio Ambrosini in his musical adaptation of T.S.Eliot's The waste land, recording it in Velludo's own small studio.
Having been denied an authorization to go ahead by Eliot's publishers Faber & Faber in London, Ambrosini had to change a part of the script that was renamed The arid land.
With a group of Venetian musicians and singers, the first version of the soundtrack was very primitive but thanks to Ermanno's wizardry it sounded as if recorded in a major studio. The recording was indeed a soundtrack for a first rendition of the musical, that was multi-level, multi-action and a 360 degree theatrical event (later to be replicated at the Contemporary Music Biennale in Venice in a much bigger setting.

CBS records in Milano were interested in releasing the soundtrack and the whole thing was re-recorded at Milano Recording, CBS's own studio. The cover was made with a painting by the surrealistic sci-fi artist Mario de Luigi, who had long specialized in depicting Venetian vistas in a future state of decay, this seemed the most appropriate cover artwork in the essence of the subject matter of the musical.

This is by no means a prog album, and its soundtrack origins are evident from the large vocal parts (on the human kind evolution, with no less than seven singers!) and mainly acoustic musical background.
Lyrics are half Italian and half English, and the result can be a bit boring (in the Jesus Christ Superstar style) for a prog fan's ears.

In the wake of the release of the album there were also some interest by the TV, where Venetian Power appeared as a group, but they were never anyway intended to be a regular touring outfit and The Arid Land was not followed by further releases under that name.

Guitarist Cornelius returned back to Denmark in 1974, working since then in the music biz. (italianprog)

An excellent jazzy fusion rarity. Head can be considered a kind Scottish Nucleus. This is their second album. The previous album GTF I once had and noted it as too jazz. The third album I more recently got and found that to be a touch too funky. With this one they got the balance just right, with lots of nice grooves, spacey bits and with the winds well-placed and not over-dominating the music. (ultimathulerecords)

Sometimes known as "the haggis of jazz fusion bands," the small combo Head were active in Glasgow in the '70s. The rhythm section of drummer Billy Kyle and bassist Graham Mince were consistent factors in the three albums released by the group over a five-year period, as was the presence of multi-instrumentalist John Davies, who doubled on keyboards and trumpet. Other members of the group changed from album to album, guitarist Charles Alexander drifting away to be replaced by Lachlan McColl, saxophonist Gordon Cruickshank taking up where previous honker Howard Copland had left off.

Self-determination, an important concept in documenting improvised music during the '70s, was vital to the Head liturgy. The group's debut release -- entitled GTF in reference to a crude Scottish way of suggesting someone should depart quickly -- was released through SRT, basically a vanity consortium. The band started up its own label, Head Records, for its final and most commercial production, Blackpool Cool. This Head should not be confused with other bands that use this name, such as a more recent outfit fronted by Gareth Sager. (Eugene Chadbourne)

Recorded at Estudios "Crystal", 14-21 March 1980.

Vía Láctea started in the 1970's as a "cosmic music" outfit. It was led by two musicians Carlos Alvarado and Miguel Angel Nava. The music featured classic spacey synthesizer excursions ala Tangerine Dream and Klaus Schulze but more quiet, restained and Ambient-like, with sometimes Ethnic / Prehispanic influences creeping in. After the first album Miguel Angel Nava left the band, leaving synthesist Alvarado as the sole member. He continued to release albums, sometimes helped by fellow experimentalists Jorge Reyes, Arturo Meza and others.

As the influential JJ Martin writes on his blog classikrock.blogspot.it: At first music almost seems like a curious mix between I Giganti and Delirium: from the first have been cloned the recitatives and from the second their typical sound from “Lo scemo e il villaggio” to “Delirium III”. From a certain point, however, we also have a massive orchestral presence, halfway between the most symphonic Lucio Battisti and New Trolls’ “Concerto Grosso No. 1”. All of this is then topped off with 4+4 Nora Orlandi’s choirs, or those used in Ivano Fossati’s first LP.

The description is very precise and appropriate, with all references put in the right place. But I would like to add one little thing. In my opinion, joining in a totally bold and original way all the features mentioned above, Tirelli brothers have managed to create a very special album in the history of Italian progressive rock. To masterfully juxtapose different musical inspiration is one big thing, but instilling everything in this context one’s own strong temperament, thanks to beautiful musical compositions, is a completely different story. “L’Acqua Purificatrice” is in fact a record cloaked in beautiful music, with strong melodies, angry, humorous and poignant vocals, highly symphonic sections combined with other ones highly rhythmic and engaging, creating an intriguing blend of funky and prog.

Heard today, Tirellis’ LP is a total immersion in a pleasant ‘70s atmosphere, that doesn’t sound dated at all. Indeed, it is precisely this mood, amplified by certain sounds and the science fiction / social content of the lyrics, to make this record one of its kind. Often unknown to most people, it deserves to be rediscovered: the only release by Lapera still retains today its charm, and remains one of my favorite releases from the Italian musical panorama of the Seventies. (Fabio Zuffanti)
