Art Zoyd studios - Expériences de vol
"Art Zoyd Studios" has set itself the task of encouraging the designing and production of new works, distributing them and favouring the development of musical research, notably through devising new creative tools and processes involving state-of-the-art technologies, and beyond that, supporting efforts in making music fully part of the blossoming of digital arts. Art Zoyd Studios strives to make audiences more aware of contemporary musical forms, and carries out actions, notably with local communities, with educational purposes or favouring cultural democratisation.

For several years already we have devised a series of releases entitled "Expériences de vol" ("flight experiences") to ensure the continued availability of works commissioned by our studios, and at the same time devise a kind of unifying thread linking all the pieces together.
The title "Expériences de vol" is borrowed from a series of three pieces I had composed in the 1990s.

These days, we feel that the needs, tools, equipment, skills and habits have changed, at first imperceptibly (early 2000s) then, more recently, in a radical way, although different generations of musicians have perceived this change differently: indeed, many composers still adhere to the "commission, composition, performers" pattern, whereas newer generations are searching for mixed or shared languages, for stage work and new creative spaces.
We believe that the prospects and raison d’être of studios must be constantly questioned, without resting on past experiences or certainties which turn into postulates. Composers are increasingly artists in the broader sense (as in the Renaissance days), with an interest in, not only, obviously, music, its substance, forms and technologies, but also in all possible marriages, hybridisations or associations with other performing and graphic arts, including image and video art, VR (virtual reality) and new media (Internet, 3D sound, VR headsets…)
Whether a craving, a need or simply the product of combined visions, composers, as artists from generations who have either been the product or the architects of a process of constant amalgamation and cross-breeding between practices, are increasingly seeking different, renewed or prototype, knowledge and collaborations. Not because music has given ground to other, "intrusive" or "invasive" art forms, but rather that its place and ranking, whether on concert stages, in theatres or auditoriums, seem to have narrowed in some respects; equally narrow are its powers of self-regeneration in the face of the often too rigid operation of musical institutions, orchestras or ensembles, which are run according to inherited traditions.
There is another observation to be made - that more and more artists, plastic artists, video artists and choreographers are questioning sound itself or the sonic "language" in order to take it over and make it fully part of their work, in a non-disassociated manner, without necessarily understanding (or having a point of view on) the aspect of "music" which, for us, remains a fundamental part of the art of hearing, of organising time and of listening – precisely with regard to the history of this art.
This issue of the place of music also applies to applications in the field of games or "virtual reality" which, in their inception, have often tended to neglect sound and music.
The composer must find his place in these new spaces, which involves questioning technical and artistic aspects of one’s art, and redefining one’s writing and paradigms and, beyond that, addressing the issue of future "new" audiences.
(Gérard Hourbette, composer & director of Art Zoyd Studios. March 2018)

AN EXPERIENCE... UNEXPECTED
At last, we are happy that this vast enterprise is finally released. Basically, it was a challenge: ask to 13 composers around the world to create a piece for Ensemble Musiques Nouvelles - directed by Jean-Paul Dessy (but founded by Henri Pousseur in 1962). From Europe, USA or Japan, try to explore the compositional frame of today's creators, and not only in the well-known 'contemporary scene' but to push further the boundary and discover the unexpected result of some of the greatest names of today's electronic world.

ART ZOYD & ENSEMBLE MUSIQUES NOUVELLES
For the realisation of this big project, many forces were necessary : two regions between two countries - Belgium and France - two ensembles - Musiques Nouvelles (20 musicians) and Art Zoyd (6 musicians) and their high-tech studios - and two years of work. The result is contained in a 3 CD box - 172 minutes of music - and a 40 pages booklet explaining it all.

NEW COMPOSITIONS AND UNPUBLISHED WORK
Opus #1 by RYOJI IKEDA is the first piece that he wrote for non-electronic instruments - and paradoxically, one of his most accomplished work. ATAU TANAKA's composition is for chamber orchestra, theremin and infrared! HORATIO RADULESCU, the founder of the Spectral technique of composition is, for sure, one of the greatest composers alive, this is his last Opus (#64). DAVID SHEA is well-known by his many collaborations with Sub Rosa and Tzadik. JEAN-LUC FAFCHAMPS has just published his second complete cd on Sub Rosa a few months ago. JEAN-PAUL DESSY questions the mermaids' voices and KASPER T. TOEPLITZ organizes a Glenn Branca revival. JEROME COMBIER tries to impulse black light in music. GIOVANNI SOLLIMA mixes baroque chamber orchestra and techno rhythm. GERARD HOURBETTE continues Art Zoyd's expressionist legend. JEAN-CHRISTOPHE FELDHANDLER organizes a space in constant change, at the threshold of its widening. FAUSTO ROMITELLI opposes string quartet and a single mixer (another fragment of his genious, waiting for An index of Metal...). GUALTIERO DAZZI creates a tragic cinematographic space...

13 compositions, 13 unpublished works and 13 ways to combine electronic music and classical instruments. (Sub Rosa)

Airlord biography
Airlord was formed in Wellington in 1976, played the pubs and flew to Australia the following year, recorded an excellent albeit ignored album, "Clockwork Revenge", and disbanded in 1978. The group failed to secure a large New Zealand audience, largely because they performed original material. Airlord had to escape to Australia to earn a decent living, and although they were never a top draw card across the Tasman, their lifespan was a lot longer than had they stayed in New Zealand.

In 1979 after Airlord had disbanded, Steve MacKenzie and Alan Blackburn formed Machine with Tony Jax on drums and Steve Kulak on bass. They released one single in 1981 called "They Destroy Me".

Before Airlord, Steve MacKenzie had teamed up with Reece Kirk to form a duo called Friends. They released two singles, one in 1974 and the other in 1975. Reece had also released a single by himself in 1972. (progarchives)

In Spe biography
In Spe has an interesting story. It is essentially two different, high-quality, bands. Both versions reflecting the vision of an enigmatic leader. The first incarnation was founded by Erkki-Sven Tüür, who has gone on to be be one of the top classical composers in the world. He set out to create music called chamber rock (sound familliar?). With the help of drummer Arvo Urb, guitarist Riho Sibul, keyboardist Mart Metsala, bass player Toivo Kopli, Flautist Peeter Brambat, and his wife Anne Tüür on piano, the first band was formed.

The band played gigs, and recorded, all the while building a stellar reputation. In 1983 they released the highly acclaimed, yet rare, self-titled debut. This, along with their existing notoriety, would form the basis of them being seen as the godfathers of Estonian prog. Some refer to it as one of the best prog recordings of all time. Being largely instrumental was a blessing in disguise. It didn't have as much trouble getting by Soviet censors as vocal recordings of the time. Still, only 3000 copies were made.

The band would take a drastic turn near the end of 1983, as Tüür left to study music full time. Enter keyboardist, and music student, Alo Mattiisen. His jazzy style would change the direction of the band, but not diminish the quality. Under his leadership they released anther album (also self-titled), featuring the eclectic "Typewriter Concerto in D." The piece actually uses a manual typewriter as a percussion instrument. This album enjoyed a much larger distribution than its predecessor. Which also led to some confusion. People who had heard the tales of the first release, were faced with something quite different.

Mattiisen rose to become a national hero, by writing music for Estonia's Singing Revolution.

The recordings are available, but still rare. The 1994 Musea release of the second album is said to be of poor quality. In 1999 the first album was released on CD, and some of Mattiisen's rock operas (performed by In Spe) were released in 2000. (Progarchives)

Cassiber ‎– 1982–1992 (30th Anniversary Cassiber Box) (2003, 6xCD, England)

In 1982 Cassiber (phonetically: ‘a message smuggled out of prison’) crashed like a locomotive into the Deutsche Neue Welle. Founded by Heiner Goebbels, Alfred Harth, Christoph Anders and Chris Cutler, Cassiber managed to fuse materials and attitudes drawn from experimental rock, fringe jazz, punk, pop, plunderphonics, improvisation, close structure and musique concrete with an energetic and complex form of studio (and then concert) composition that was unique in its combination of diverse experimental approaches to form with a risky, emotional and expressive mode of execution. Through a deep connection between instrumentation, form and topicality, their musical evolution tracked and anticipated the political and technological changes of their time. Thus, in the course of their 10 years of intermittent touring and 4 records they evolved significantly through the high stakes energy of the earlier releases into their later, more complex and composed, studio works (by which time they had become a trio: Goebbels, Anders, Cutler) when they also had early access to the first generation of polyphonic samplers. Highly radical, their music opened up song form by abandoning, extending or crashing sideways into it – building structure from a combination of noise, libido, high musicality and – unique for the time - a great deal of cultural debris. This box collects it all (the majority of it out-of-print for some time now) alongside a lot of unreleased material – and full concert DVD. The 4 historic releases have been carefully re-mastered by Bob Drake and there are, in addition two extra CDs, one that collects the Cassix, Duck and Cover and Ground Zero projects (also re-mastered) and one of unreleased studio and live material, and a DVD (about 2 hours) of live and studio footage - including a mini documentary made during the recording of A Face We All Know. It comes in the usual sturdy box with a fat booklet of documents, interviews, information, photographs, pictures, itineraries and miscellaneous memorabilia. Limited to an edition of 1000 copies (RéR Megacorp)
